She was previously working at Atlanta Community Food Bank as a Benefit Coordinator. Autumn graduated from Eckerd College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development with a Global Focus. After graduation, she spent a year working with a sustainable development NGO in Nicaragua as the Volunteer Coordinator. At first it served only fifteen men, but because of his inspiration and vision Dismas House grew into Dismas Charities with centers of service throughout the country. Father Diersen’s spirit continues to guide Dismas helping all involved commit themselves to healing the human spirit. In 1961, a movie called the “Hoodlum Priest’‘ was released in efforts to portray the true work of Father Clark. “Hoodlum Priest” premiered in Saint Louis on February 28, 1961.The movie, filmed in the slums and alleys of St. Louis, went on to be one of the top 10 films of 1961.

We provide multiple levels of evidence based interventions and group sessions, case management, therapeutic services, and substance abuse/recovery education. This is all accomplished within a supportive and compassionate community culture on our three acre campus in the north valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Grayce Gadson joined the Dismas House as the IPS Supervisor in the Fall of 2022. Previously, she worked at Parker Center as an IPS Employment Specialist & Supervisor. She served as a Cognitive Behavior Instructor & Client Services Coordinator in the TN Department of Corrections prison and jails starting in 2016 with Project Return. As Project Coordinator, she initiated a program under a grant from the Justice Department awarded to the Gilead House in Kokomo, Indiana, called Mentoring Incarcerated Parents under the Second Change Act of 2007.

Skill-based groups, like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), help residents practice emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, and distress tolerance skills. Dismas House was founded in 1974 by Father Jack Hickey, a Vanderbilt University chaplain. Father Hickey founded the organization alongside the Vanderbilt Prison Project after observing the lack of services and housing available to returning citizens.

Studying Social Entrepreneurship led her to measure success through social impact and sustainable change. She began her career working in admissions and recruitment in higher education and local charter schools. She made the transition into reentry services at Project Return, working for their transitional employment social enterprise. There, Audra found her passion of working in reentry, advocating for and empowering our community. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Social Work with plans to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and continue her passion of working with returning citizens. For over 30 years, the flagship program Dismas House in Worcester has provided a welcoming home and support for former prisoners looking to turn their lives around. Students are given opportunities for internships in non-profit management and/or live-in positions in the Dismas community. There are simple rules, such as no violence, drugs or alcohol; and there are expectations, such as attendance at dinners, curfews, chores and participating in house meetings and activities. Despite some belief that the movie exploited a good cause, it gave impetus to the Halfway House movement. Although Father Clark was a well-known and respected priest in the community, there was strong opposition to the opening of Dismas House for ex-offenders at that time. In other words, staff cannot say that an inmate, whatever the circumstances, is automatically ineligible for transfer to a RRC. After operating from an 8-bed house for 46 years, Dismas House moved to a new 72-bed campus in 2020. Along with this physical expansion came an intentional re-envisioning, redesign, and diversification of our program offerings with an emphasis on supporting the whole person. We have a seasonal farm stand with produce from our zero energy greenhouse, eggs, candles, and wood products. Dismas has the added benefit of supporting the rehabilitative work of Dismas House, reconnecting former prisoners with society, providing them with a new sense of self-worth and purpose. We offer our residents a wide array of services that are offered by Dismas House staff or through our many partnerships and collaborations with outside service and program providers. The May 24, 2013, memorandum is very specific about how federal halfway house placements should be handled. Generally speaking, though, the memorandum instructs BOP staff to conduct individualized federal halfway house placement decisions. The memo treats prisoners with longer sentences and fewer community ties  as better candidates for longer federal halfway house placements.
